Lost your GST login? Here is the honest answer, and how to get your certificate back anyway

Someone asks for your GST certificate. A bank, a vendor, a marketplace, maybe a tender form. You open the GST portal and realise you have no idea what your username is. Or the password. Or the mobile number you registered with years ago.

So you type "GST certificate download without login" into Google. Fair enough. Almost everyone does.

Can you download the GST certificate without login?

No. The certificate (Form GST REG-06) sits inside your own GST account, and the portal does not hand it out without a login. Not by GST number, not by PAN, not with any trick.

You will see websites claiming otherwise. We will come to those later. First, let's see what the portal lets you do without logging in, because it is useful.

What you can see without login: Search Taxpayer

The GST portal has a public tool called Search Taxpayer. Anyone can use it.

  1. Go to gst.gov.in

  2. Click Search Taxpayer on the home page

  3. Choose Search by GSTIN/UIN or Search by PAN

  4. Enter the number and the captcha

You will see the legal name, trade name, registration date, status and type of taxpayer. That is good enough to check whether a supplier's GST number is real and active. If you only have a PAN, our guide on GST number search by PAN shows how to find the GSTIN first.

But this is not your certificate. It is a screen of details, and there is no REG-06 to download from it. If a bank or a marketplace wants the actual certificate, a screenshot of Search Taxpayer will not do.

The normal way: download after login

If you do have your login, it takes two minutes.

  1. Log in at gst.gov.in

  2. Go to Services, then User Services, then View/Download Certificates

  3. Find Registration Certificate (Form GST REG-06)

  4. Click the download icon

  5. You get a PDF

For regular taxpayers, the certificate does not expire, so one download is good until your details change.

Just registered and not able to see it? Check the status of your application using the ARN under Services, Registration, Track Application Status. The certificate shows up only after the officer approves your application.

Forgot your username or password? Fix it in 5 minutes

This is what most people searching "without login" actually need. They do not need a loophole, they need their account back.

Forgot username

  1. On the login page, click Forgot Username

  2. Enter your GSTIN (or provisional ID) and the captcha

  3. An OTP goes to your registered mobile and email

  4. Enter it, and the portal emails you your username

Forgot password

  1. Click Forgot Password on the login page

  2. Enter your username and the captcha

  3. Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile and email

  4. Create a new password

What if the registered mobile and email are also gone?

This is where it gets stuck. Both OTPs go to the contact details you gave at registration. If you no longer have the number or the email, the online route is closed.

In that case you will have to take it up with your jurisdictional GST officer, who can help get the contact details updated. Carry your PAN, your Aadhaar and a proof that you are the proprietor or authorised signatory. The process can vary by state, hence check with the GST office or your tax professional before you go.

One more thing worth checking before you panic. Many small businesses register through a CA, an accountant or a service provider. If that is you, the login may be sitting with them, and the registered mobile or email might even be theirs. Ask them first.

Beware of "GST certificate download by GST number" sites

You will find sites and apps that say, "Enter your GST number and get the certificate." Be careful here.

Your certificate carries your address, your PAN-linked details and your business information. A site that can generate it for any GSTIN is either showing you public Search Taxpayer data in a nice format, or it is collecting your details for something else. Neither is the official REG-06.

If a document did not come from the GST portal, banks and buyers may not accept it. And you may have shared your data for nothing.

Why you should keep the certificate handy

The certificate is asked for more often than people expect. Opening a current account, getting listed on a marketplace, onboarding with a big vendor, applying for a tender or a loan. All of these usually ask for it.

Mismatched details create trouble too. If your address or trade name has changed, update your registration and download the fresh certificate, because the old one will show the old details. Not sure if you even needed to register? Read the eligibility for GST registration, or if you run a one-person business, the guide on GST registration for sole proprietorship.

Quick summary

  • GST certificate cannot be downloaded without login. Anything that claims it can is not official

  • Search Taxpayer shows public details, not the certificate

  • Lost username or password can be recovered with the registered mobile and email

  • If both are lost, go to your jurisdictional GST officer

  • Once downloaded, keep a copy in more than one place

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I download my GST certificate without login?

No. The GST registration certificate (Form GST REG-06) can only be downloaded after logging in to the GST portal. You can view basic registration details without login using Search Taxpayer, but that is not the certificate.

  • How do I download the GST certificate after login?

Log in at gst.gov.in, go to Services, then User Services, then View/Download Certificates. Click the download icon next to Registration Certificate (Form GST REG-06).

  • Can I download a GST certificate by GST number?

Not from the official portal. Searching by GSTIN on Search Taxpayer shows public details like legal name, status and registration date, but it does not give you the certificate PDF.

  • I forgot my GST username and password. What should I do?

Use the Forgot Username and Forgot Password links on the login page. OTPs go to your registered mobile number and email, so you need access to at least those to recover your account.

  • What if my registered mobile number and email are no longer active?

Online recovery will not work. Approach your jurisdictional GST officer to get your contact details updated, and confirm the process with the office or your tax professional.

  • Does the GST certificate expire?

For regular taxpayers, the certificate does not expire. If your registration details change, download the updated certificate from the portal.

  • Is a Search Taxpayer printout accepted instead of the certificate?

Usually not. Banks, marketplaces and vendors generally ask for the actual REG-06 from the portal. A printout of Search Taxpayer is only good for verifying a GST number.
