Need your FSSAI registration in a hurry? If you run a small trading or retail food business, you may not have to wait for the regular process at all.
FSSAI has an Instant (Tatkal) facility on the FoSCoS portal for certain kinds of food business. Eligible applicants fill in the application online, complete digital verification, and get the licence or registration right there, based on a self-declaration.
There is a catch though. Tatkal is not open to every food business, and being “a retailer” or “a wholesaler” is not always enough. So check eligibility first, then the fees, then start your FSSAI registration.
Who can apply for Tatkal FSSAI registration?
Tatkal works only for certain Kinds of Business (KoBs). On FoSCoS, these are:
Importers
Merchant exporters
Wholesalers
Distributors
Retailers
Transporters
Storage without atmospheric control, and cold storage
Food vending agencies
Direct sellers
Petty retailers such as snack and tea shops
Hawkers and mobile food vendors
What you sell matters as much as what you are. If you deal in meat or fish, most of these categories are out (importers and merchant exporters are the exception). Transporters carrying milk, meat or fish are also excluded. Manufacturers and processors are not on the list at all, so a bakery, a restaurant or a cloud kitchen cannot use Tatkal. If that is you, our guide on FSSAI licence for a cloud kitchen explains the regular route.
Three more things to check before you start:
Business type. Tatkal began with proprietorships only. FSSAI’s order also lists a verification route for partnership and registered firms, but whether your business type is accepted can depend on your category and state. Confirm on FoSCoS first.
Existing licence. You cannot apply if you already hold a valid licence or registration for the same premises.
Recent suspension. You also cannot apply if a licence or registration for those premises was suspended or cancelled in the last three months.
If you are a retailer, our post on the FSSAI registration process for retailers shows what the regular route looks like for comparison.
Tatkal vs regular FSSAI registration
The big difference is how fast it moves.
Tatkal | Regular route | |
|---|---|---|
Processing | Instant for eligible cases | Normal scrutiny, which can take days to weeks depending on the category |
Verification | Digital (Aadhaar, PAN, GST or CIN) plus self-declaration | Documents checked by the authority |
Inspection before grant | None | As applicable |
Validity | Perpetual, if issued on or after 1 April 2026 | Perpetual, if issued on or after 1 April 2026 |
Who can apply | Selected KoBs and products only | All food businesses |
So if you are wondering about the FSSAI Tatkal registration time period, eligible applications are issued instantly once you finish the steps. But Tatkal is not a faster version of every application. If your business is not on the list, you go the regular way.
Tatkal FSSAI registration fees
The fees are the same as the regular route. You pay the annual fee for your category when you apply.
Type | Government fee |
|---|---|
FSSAI Registration | ₹100 per year |
State Licence | ₹2,000 per year onwards (varies by category and state) |
Central Licence | ₹7,500 per year + GST |
Which one you need depends on your turnover. From 1 April 2026, a basic registration covers turnover up to ₹1.5 crore, a state licence covers ₹1.5 crore to ₹50 crore, and a central licence applies above ₹50 crore or for some categories like importers. Check the fee shown on FoSCoS before you pay, because it can vary by category.
One more thing. “Perpetual” does not mean you pay once. The annual fee still comes up every year.
Tatkal FSSAI registration process
Everything is online on the FoSCoS portal. Keep your business details, ID details and photos ready before you begin. The exact requirements change a little with your Kind of Business.
Open FoSCoS. Go to the portal and select “Apply for Tatkal License/Registration”.
Choose your Kind of Business. Pick retailer, wholesaler, distributor, transporter, importer or whichever applies. The portal tells you whether that category is eligible, and you may also have to select your food product categories.
Enter your business details. Fill in the business and premises information. FoSCoS verifies it digitally using PAN, Aadhaar, GST or other identifiers. If you are a proprietor applying for a licence, you will usually need a GST registration number, because verification for licences uses GST and Aadhaar. Be careful here. What you enter forms part of your self-declaration.
Make the self-declaration. You declare that there is no valid FSSAI licence or registration for the same premises, and that none was suspended or cancelled in the previous three months. You also upload photos of the unit, including one of the entrance or front.
Complete digital verification. For registrations, the instant route uses PAN and Aadhaar for petty food businesses, and some categories use Aadhaar alone.
Pay the fee. Pay the full applicable annual fee. Once the application goes through, the licence or registration is issued on the portal.
Documents and details to keep ready
The list changes with your category, but you will usually need:
Your identity and contact details
PAN and Aadhaar, where applicable
Business and premises address
Details of the food products you handle
Your Kind of Business
A photo of the premises
GST or other business identifiers, if applicable
Importers and merchant exporters will also need an import export registration code. Whatever you upload, make sure the details match what you type on FoSCoS.
After you get the certificate
Getting it instantly does not mean the business is exempt from food safety rules.
Food Safety Officers can still inspect the premises. FSSAI’s order is clear that enforcement powers stay with the authorities, even for instant licences.
If you got your instant licence before 1 April 2026, it was issued for one year and runs to the date printed on it. It becomes perpetual when you renew it.
Under the 2026 rules, a licence or registration can be treated as suspended if the annual fee is not paid or the annual compliance return is not filed on time.
Every detail you submit has to be accurate. FSSAI’s order says a false declaration can attract a penalty of up to ₹10 lakh under Section 61 of the FSS Act, 2006.
Is Tatkal right for you?
If you are a retailer, wholesaler, distributor, transporter, petty seller or in another listed category, the instant route can save you a lot of time.
But don’t choose it only because you need the certificate urgently. Check your business activity and your products first. A business can fall under an eligible category and still be excluded because of the food it handles.

Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for Tatkal FSSAI Registration?

Eligibility also depends on the food products handled by the business.
How long does Tatkal FSSAI Registration take?
For an eligible application, the Tatkal facility provides instant issuance after the required digital verification, self-declaration and fee payment are completed successfully. It is not available for every FSSAI application.
What is the fee for Tatkal FSSAI Registration?
The applicable fee follows the existing FSSAI fee structure. Depending on the type of approval, the government fee may be ₹100 for registration, ₹2,000 for a State License or ₹7,500 for a Central License, subject to the applicable category and taxes.
Can every food business apply through the Tatkal route?
No. The Tatkal facility is restricted to specified Kinds of Business and food product categories. Certain businesses dealing with meat, fish, dairy and other excluded categories may not qualify even if their general business category is listed as eligible.

The requirements depend on the type of food business. Applicants may need PAN and Aadhaar details, business and premises information, food product details, applicable business identifiers and photographs of the food business premises.
Is inspection required for Tatkal FSSAI Registration?
Instant issuance does not remove FSSAI's enforcement powers. Food Safety Officers and other authorised officials can still conduct inspections and take enforcement action as permitted under the applicable food safety regulations.
How long is a Tatkal FSSAI Registration valid?
A Tatkal licence or registration issued under the instant facility is valid for one year and can be renewed through the applicable FSSAI renewal process.
