Why the class you choose decides what you own
Three things worth knowing before you pick, because the class list is the part of an application people get wrong.
Protection is granted class by class
Registering a trademark does not hand you the name outright. A mark registered for computer software leaves the same word free for somebody else to register for clothing, so two businesses can hold one mark quite legitimately as long as they sell different things.
Choose for what you sell, and what is next
Pick the classes that describe what you actually sell today and what you can see yourself selling, then search each one for marks that already sit close to yours. A conflict found before filing costs an afternoon; the same conflict found after filing costs the application.
Several classes, one application
The 45 classes come from the NICE classification, the international standard, which is why a class number means the same thing outside India. Registering in more than one of them is still a single Form TM-A, so adding a class is a question of scope and fees rather than paperwork.
